☆*:.。. My Background in Tech📚 .。.:*☆

My journey into the tech industry is a pretty unorthodox one, at least in my opinion. I originally didn’t want to be in tech…I wanted to be a 2D animator.

It was my junior year of college. After reflecting on where I wanted to be after I graduated from undergrad, I wanted to ensure that I was able to have a stable job and income. I looked at the state of the animation job market and I knew I would’ve not been able to handle the pressure and intense competition it took to be an animator. Drawing is a hobby of mine and I did not want it to be that I got burnt out from something I loved doing for fun. That ultimately made me rethink my career choice. After coding for the past two years (freshman and sophomore year), I decided to dip a toe into computer science. From there, I didn’t look back.

I landed my first internship at Company A the summer before my senior year. I felt like I learned so much in those three months than I did in an entire semester. After exceeding expectations for a tech intern at Company A, I was offered a full-time position following my graduation. This gave me the drive to continue learning and building my skillset.

Unfortunately, my offer from Company A fell through a few months later due to budget cuts for the following year. This left me absolutely crushed. After taking a couple days to rot in bed and let it sink in, I realized the rejection was only a temporary setback. I was determined to reach my goal of getting a job for sometime after graduation.

I continued researching and studying as much as I could to build on my tech knowledge. I applied to as many positions as I humanly could. I earned a few more tech certificates. I adjusted my resume numerous times and wrote a number of cover letters. I reached out for feedback on my resume and LinkedIn profile consistently.

After many applications, rejections, and ghostings, I received a call a week before my graduation that I got a job offer from Company B. I graduated in May of this year and started my current position at Company B in early July.

And I’m not stopping there. While working full-time, I’m continuing my studies and preparing for my upcoming master’s degree. I’m eager to dive deeper into computer science and expand my technical expertise, especially as I look toward the next steps in my career. In the meantime, I’m taking courses, building on my knowledge, and staying up to date with new trends and technologies. I’m excited to keep learning and growing, and I’m focused on making the most of every opportunity that comes my way.🌱📚🔥

(NOTE: By the way, this is not a jab at anyone who wants to become an animator!! Do follow your heart and dreams when it comes to pursuing your dream career! This is just my personal experience when it came to thinking about where I wanted my life to be post-grad. Also, I didn’t want one of my main stress relievers to become a stressor in my life :)!)

2024/12/12 Edited to

... Read moreMy journey, as you read, wasn't a straight line, especially in the competitive world of tech. When I mentioned the animation industry's pressure, that feeling of intense competition carried over into my tech job hunt, but in a different way. It wasn't just about technical skills; it was about standing out in a sea of qualified candidates, especially as a #techgirl. One of the biggest lessons I learned was the power of networking and building connections. After my offer from Company A fell through, I felt lost. But instead of just sending out resumes blindly, I started reaching out to people. LinkedIn became my best friend. I connected with alumni from my university who were in tech, attended virtual career fairs, and even joined some online communities for women in STEM. These connections weren't just about finding job leads; they were invaluable for gaining insights, getting resume feedback, and understanding what companies were really looking for. Many people are genuinely willing to help if you approach them respectfully and ask specific questions. Another crucial step was continuously upskilling and earning certifications. The image in my post mentions my path to a BA in Computer Science and later a Masters in Data Analytics Engineering. While these academic pursuits are foundational, the certificates I pursued in between were often what helped bridge skill gaps and signal my dedication to potential employers. Things like cloud certifications, specific programming language proficiencies, or even data science workshops can give you an edge. They show initiative beyond your degree and prove you're committed to staying current in a fast-evolving field. For aspiring Tech Analysts or anyone looking to enter data-intensive roles, these extra credentials demonstrate practical application. Dealing with rejection is also a huge part of navigating competition. I mentioned rotting in bed for a couple of days – and it's okay to feel that disappointment! But then, it's about pivoting. Every 'no' was an opportunity to refine my resume, practice my interview skills, and reflect on what I could do better. I started keeping a log of interviews, noting questions I struggled with and researching better answers. This iterative process was key. Don't take rejections personally; see them as data points to improve. This resilience is a muscle you build over time, and it's essential for any #techgirl facing competitive odds. Finally, don't underestimate the importance of a strong online presence. Beyond LinkedIn, having personal projects, a GitHub profile showcasing your code, or even a blog where you share your learning journey can make you memorable. For me, highlighting my journey from animation to tech became a unique selling point. It showed adaptability and a different perspective. Embrace what makes your background unique; it can be your superpower in a competitive market. Remember, competition isn't just about battling others; it's about pushing yourself to be your best. My journey as a #techgirl has taught me that persistence, continuous learning, and strategic networking are your greatest allies. Keep exploring, keep building, and don't be afraid to carve your own path, just like I did from a Tech Internship to a Full-Time Tech Analyst role, and now towards a Masters in Data Analytics Engineering!
