☆*:.。. Your First Tech Resume📄 .。.:*☆

Congratulations on taking one of the first steps toward entering the tech world! Your resume will serve as your personal sales pitch every time you apply for a tech job, so it’s important to make it stand out!

“But…I don’t have any professional experience in tech. What company is going to want to hire someone with no experience in the field?”

That’s totally okay! While some employers have unrealistic expectations when considering someone just entering the tech world, there are some companies out there that do understand and are willing to consider the qualifications you do have. You never know! Having these following things on your resume is a good place to start if you’re just starting out:

1️⃣ Name and Contact Info—a no brainer! Having your name, a phone number, and an appropriate email will make it easier for your recruiter to identify and contact you about your qualifications relating to a job. Having a LinkedIn link towards the top of your profile is great too! It’s okay if you don’t have a LinkedIn in the beginning, it can be added later on.

2️⃣ Education: List your most recent education history from an accredited institution. Be sure to include things like the name of the institution, location (town and state are fine), degree and major, graduation month and year (past or upcoming), and GPA. Feel free to list your high school Alma Mater and keep it there until you graduate from your most recent academic institution.

3️⃣ Skills: One of the most important components of a tech resume. This section should include both soft skills and hard skills. Soft skills should include things like “detail-oriented” or “time management”— skills that can transfer over in any field of work when it comes to collaborating with others and managing your work. If you’re great at time blocking and prioritizing tasks, feel free to include time management and organization under your skills. Hard skills should be related to any programming languages, softwares, and applications you have experience working with on a consistent basis. If you’re just completing your first lesson of Java, don’t put it on that resume just yet! Take some time to get comfortable with the foundations of the language and complete a project or test your knowledge with some LeetCode—then list it as a hard technical skill. You should also include the proficiency of your knowledge of your technical skills to let hiring managers know how comfortable with various technologies and languages. If you work more with advanced concepts of Python, feel free to include “Advanced” in parentheses next to Python.

4️⃣ Relevant Coursework: If you're just starting out in tech or are in the middle of a bootcamp, listing relevant courses can show employers your foundational knowledge and commitment to learning. Include any coursework related to programming, data analysis, computer science, or software engineering. This could include classes like “Data Structures & Algorithms,” “Web Development,” or “Database Management.” Make sure to note any projects that stand out from these courses that demonstrate your hands-on experience.

5️⃣ Certificates: If you've completed any online courses or earned certifications in technologies like AWS, Google Cloud, Python, or even something more specific like a coding bootcamp or specialized training, include it here. Certifications show your dedication to self-improvement and help validate your knowledge, especially if you don't yet have a ton of professional experience.

6️⃣ Additional Work Experience: Even if you don't have formal tech roles yet, don't skip over this section! Include any part-time jobs, internships, freelance work, or volunteer experiences that showcase transferable skills. For example, if you worked as a customer service rep, highlight your problem-solving, communication, and multitasking skills. These are valuable in any tech position and show your ability to work in a team and manage client relationships.

7️⃣ Honors & Activities: Did you receive any academic awards or recognition? Participated in hackathons or start a coding club? These accomplishments can highlight your initiative, passion for tech, and ability to excel in a team environment. Listing activities like participating in coding competitions or attending tech meetups can also show you're proactive about networking and growing your skills outside of the classroom.

8️⃣ Interests: A brief section listing your personal interests can help give your resume a more well-rounded feel. While you want to keep it professional, showing a bit of your personality—whether it’s coding side projects, tech blogging, or an interest in AI or machine learning—can make you stand out as a candidate who's genuinely passionate about the field. Just keep it relevant and concise.

Be sure to keep your resume clean and concise, ideally one page. Focus on what you can bring to the table, even if it’s not a ton of direct experience yet. The goal is to show you're eager, capable, and ready to take on a tech role!🌱🔥👩🏻‍💻✨

... Read moreEntering the tech field for the first time can feel daunting, especially when crafting your resume without previous experience. However, you can showcase your skills and potential effectively by emphasizing critical sections on your resume. 1️⃣ **Include Personal Details**: Always start with your name, contact information, and a link to your LinkedIn profile if available. This is crucial for employers to reach you. 2️⃣ **Highlight Your Education**: Your academic achievements can help establish a foundation. Mention institutions, degrees, graduation dates, and relevant coursework. 3️⃣ **Showcase Skills**: Differentiate between your hard and soft skills. List programming languages, software knowledge, and interpersonal skills, marking your proficiency levels. 4️⃣ **List Certifications**: If you've completed online courses or certifications, make sure to include them. This can validate your skills even without professional experience. 5️⃣ **Additional Experience**: Highlight any internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer work where you utilized transferable skills. Employers value relevant experiences outside formal positions. 6️⃣ **Extracurricular Activities**: Engagement in tech-related clubs, hackathons, or competitions reflects your commitment to the field. 7️⃣ **Personal Interests**: A brief mention of your interests related to tech can add a personal touch and show your passion for technology. Keep it relevant and concise—this will make you memorable. 8️⃣ **Professional Layout**: Ensure your resume is neatly formatted and ideally one page long. Clarity and conciseness are key - focus on what you can bring to potential employers.
