HOW I EDIT WITH PROCREATE

2024/4/9 Edited to

... Read moreAs someone who recently jumped into the world of Procreate for photo editing, I totally get how exciting (and a little overwhelming!) it can feel at first. My journey started with wanting to give my photos a unique, artistic touch, and honestly, Procreate on my iPad has been a revelation! Many wonder about Procreate iPad compatibility - good news is, most modern iPads that support the Apple Pencil work beautifully, offering a seamless and intuitive editing experience. The Apple Pencil, whether it's the 1st or 2nd generation, is truly your magic wand here, giving you precision that's hard to beat. One of the first things I learned and found super helpful was how to manage layers. Think of layers as transparent sheets stacked on top of your original photo. This means you can add effects, brushes, or colors without permanently altering your base image. Importing a photo is simple – just hit the wrench icon, then 'Add', and 'Insert a photo'. I always duplicate my photo layer before starting so I have a backup! Now, let's talk about brushes – they're the heart of Procreate! While the article touched on using 'Monoline' and 'Decimals' for outlining, these are just the tip of the iceberg. I've found 'Monoline' perfect for crisp, clean lines when I want to add graphic elements or text, and 'Decimals' for cool dotted textures or borders. But don't stop there! Explore the various brush sets – from abstract to calligraphy – or even download custom brushes online (like those from Etsy, as mentioned in the OCR). Experimenting with different brushes can add unique textures, subtle glows, or even paint-like effects to your photos, radically transforming their mood. Removing backgrounds was another game-changer for me. While the article mentioned using Canva for this, Procreate actually has powerful built-in tools too! My go-to method involves the 'Selection' tool (the 'S' icon). You can use 'Freehand' or 'Automatic' to select the area you want to keep or remove. Once selected, you can easily inverse the selection and clear the background, or use 'Alpha Lock' on a layer to paint only within existing pixels, which is great for coloring specific parts of your subject. For super tricky backgrounds, I sometimes still jump to Canva for a quick, clean clip, but Procreate offers plenty of control for editing photos right there. And then there are the adjustments – this is where the real magic happens for Procreate photo editing. The article highlighted 'Gaussian Blur' and 'Noise', which are fantastic. I use 'Gaussian Blur' to soften harsh edges, create a dreamy bokeh effect behind my subject, or even to blend colors for a smooth gradient background. Just swipe right on the layer, tap the magic wand icon, and select 'Gaussian Blur'. Adding 'Noise' afterwards can give your image a cool, grainy, film-like texture, preventing it from looking too flat. But explore beyond these! Try 'Hue, Saturation, Brightness' to tweak specific colors, 'Curves' for professional tonal adjustments, or 'Color Balance' to fine-tune the overall color cast of your photo edit. Playing with these adjustments, especially applying different colors to a gradient background and then blurring them, can create truly unique and vibrant backdrops for your edited images. Finally, always remember to save your work! Procreate saves automatically, but exporting your finished piece is crucial. You can export as a JPEG for sharing, a PNG for transparent backgrounds, or even a PSD if you want to continue editing in Photoshop. It’s all about practice and having fun. The more you experiment, the more comfortable you'll become with all the powerful Procreate tools for editing photos.

Learn Procreate with me!
I’ve been creating physical art for a while now so naturally I fell in love with the digital aspect of it too (& I really wanted to make my own clay transfer sheets). But starting something as a beginner again makes me realize when you start something new, how many basics there are to learn.
