Infant Travel Tips

I've recently been traveling a lot with my 10 month old son. It can be such a daunting thing so im here to share some of my infant travel tips!

1. Have plenty of snacks and activities. My baby loves trying to reach out for everyone around us so having something to distract him helps a lot!

2. Schedule flights around nap times. I want him sleeping on our flights as much as possible!

3. Consider bringing stroller for easy transport through airport. I have a car seat/stroller combo I love using in the airports and we gate check it.

4. Consider baby wearing. Baby wearing can help free up your hands when you're flying solo with an infant but be aware they will often ask you to take baby out during TSA screening, take off and landing.

5. Feed baby during takeoff and landing to help with ear pressure. Some people also use earmuffs on babies if they will tolerate it.

What tips do you have?

... Read moreHey fellow parents! Traveling with a little one can feel like a marathon, but I've picked up some extra tricks beyond the basics that have truly saved my sanity on flights. Building on the idea of feeding during takeoff and landing for ear pressure, I've found that having a few options ready is key. For my 10-month-old, sometimes it's a bottle, sometimes solid food pouches, or even just a pacifier if he's not hungry. The key is the swallowing action. I’ve also heard from other moms that special baby earplugs can be a lifesaver for slightly older babies who might not be as eager to feed on demand during those critical moments when the airplane is changing altitude. And oh, the magical nap! Scheduling flights during nap time is genius, but what happens when they just won’t drift off? I always pack a dark, lightweight muslin blanket to create a little 'tent' over his car seat or carrier to cut out distractions. A portable white noise machine or even just playing white noise on my phone (on airplane mode, of course!) has helped tremendously. Seeing the image of a baby sleeping peacefully in a car seat stroller at an airport truly resonates – a sleeping baby, especially on an airplane or in the terminal, is pure gold! Speaking of strollers and airports, my car seat/stroller combo is my best friend. It’s so easy to maneuver through the airport. I’ve learned to also pack a large, sturdy travel bag for it. This protects it when gate-checking and sometimes even allows me to stash an extra blanket or coat inside. Navigating security can be daunting, but most TSA agents are very helpful. Just be prepared to take your little one out of the carrier or stroller for screening. Regarding the common query 'how old baby fly free,' it's super helpful to know! Generally, infants under two years old can fly free on your lap for domestic flights in the US. Internationally, you might still pay a percentage of the adult fare or taxes, so always check with your airline. While free is great, I've sometimes debated buying a separate seat for long-haul flights, especially if I want the option to use an FAA-approved car seat for extra safety and comfort (and a guaranteed nap spot!). It really depends on your budget and how much space you anticipate needing. Don't underestimate the power of a well-packed diaper bag. Beyond the obvious (diapers, wipes, changing pad), I always include a change of clothes for myself (you never know when a blowout will happen!), a small first-aid kit, and anti-bacterial wipes for surfaces. New, small, quiet toys that attach to a tray table or stroller are fantastic for keeping engagement without losing them. Think silicone teething toys, crinkle books, or even sticker books for slightly older babies. Mess-free snacks like puffs, fruit pouches, or small crackers are always in my bag. Ultimately, infant travel is an adventure. Expect the unexpected, be flexible, and remember that most people are understanding. Every trip teaches me something new about traveling with my little one. What are your must-have items or unexpected hacks for flying with an infant?
