This feeling can be unsettling, but it's also a common part of parenting, especially as children grow more independent. From my experience, the root of this disconnect often lies in the changing dynamics of trust and communication. Kids naturally seek privacy and autonomy, but dads sometimes struggle to adjust and might feel left out or confused about their child's daily life. I found that making a conscious effort to create open dialogue—without judgment or immediate questioning—helps build that bridge of understanding. One particular challenge is recognizing the balance between respecting your child's space and staying involved enough to know what's going on. Letting your child know they have a safe space to talk, whether about successes or mistakes, fosters honesty. Also, participating in shared activities or interests outside of direct questioning can open windows into their world. Remember, it's okay not to know everything. What's important is maintaining a foundation of trust and reminding your child that you're there for them, no matter what. Over time, as communication improves, those gaps of unknowns narrow, leading to stronger relationships. This journey reminds me that being a dad isn't about having all the answers but about being present and willing to listen. Trust builds from that presence, and it's the strongest tool to support your child through their growth and challenges.
