... Read moreIt’s incredible how much confidence we place in makeup sometimes, isn't it? For years, I found myself reaching for foundations and concealers out of habit, feeling like I needed them to present my 'best self.' But recently, I decided to embark on the #NoMakeupNoFilterChallenge, and it’s been one of the most liberating experiences of my life, especially as I navigate life over 40.
The idea first popped into my head after seeing so many perfect, filtered faces online. It made me wonder: what would it feel like to just... be me? To show my authentic self, with all my freckles, fine lines, and natural skin, without a single layer of foundation or a softening filter. Honestly, the first few days were a mix of apprehension and excitement. I worried about what people would think, or if I'd feel 'undone.' But a funny thing happened: nothing. Or rather, everything good happened internally.
I started noticing my skin more – not just its imperfections, but its texture, its glow after a good night's sleep, and how it reacted to different skincare routines. This challenge really highlighted the importance of a solid skincare regimen. When you’re not relying on makeup to even out your complexion, having healthy, hydrated natural skin becomes paramount. I focused on gentle cleansers, a good vitamin C serum, and, of course, SPF every single day. This shift from covering up to caring for has been transformative.
Beyond the physical, the mental shift was profound. I realized how much mental energy I used to spend on my appearance, and how much of that was driven by external validation or perceived expectations. Stepping away from makeup and filters allowed me to reclaim that energy. It’s about accepting yourself, truly, in all your natural glory. The text '1979' might just be a number on a photo, but for me, it represents years of learning and growing into the woman I am today – comfortable in my own skin.
If you're considering the no makeup challenge, here are a few things I learned:
Invest in Skincare: A good routine is your best friend. Hydration, protection, and gentle cleansing go a long way.
Start Small: Maybe try it on a weekend, or for casual outings, before jumping into it for work or big events.
Embrace Imperfections: Those 'flaws' are part of your unique story. They make you, YOU.
Focus on How You Feel: The goal isn't necessarily to look perfect, but to feel authentic and confident.
Be Patient with Yourself: It takes time to adjust, especially if you're used to wearing makeup daily.
This journey has been more than just about skipping makeup; it’s been about self-acceptance, building genuine confidence, and celebrating the skin I'm in. It’s a powerful reminder that true beauty shines from within, and sometimes, the best filter is no filter at all.
