... Read moreYou know how it is when you're growing out your hair, right? After my big chop last fall, I've been on a mission to bring back some length. And let me tell you, a classic French braid has been my absolute savior during this journey! It's not just a beautiful style; it's practical, keeps my hair neat, and surprisingly easy to do even with medium-length hair. My highlighted brown hair really pops with this style, especially when it's secured neatly at the nape of my neck, just like in the picture.
Many people think French braids are only for super long hair, but I'm here to tell you that medium-length hair is perfect for them! It's enough hair to get a good grip, and you don't end up with a braid that's so long it feels heavy. It’s truly one of the best braided hairstyles for mid-length hair. For me, it's about feeling put-together without much fuss, especially when my layers are in that awkward growing-out phase.
Want to try it yourself? Here’s my super simple way to do a classic French braid on medium hair:
Prep Your Hair: Start with detangled hair. I sometimes add a little dry shampoo or texturizing spray for extra grip, especially on freshly washed hair.
Section at the Crown: Take a section of hair from the crown of your head, right at your hairline. For a classic look, I usually go for a middle partition for my French braid, giving it that clean, symmetrical feel.
Basic Braid Start: Divide this section into three equal strands. Cross the right strand over the middle, then the left strand over the new middle. This is just like starting a regular three-strand braid.
Add Hair: This is where the French braid magic happens! Before you make your next cross, pick up a small, even section of hair from the side of your head (either right or left, corresponding to the strand you're about to cross) and add it to that strand. Then, cross both sections together over the middle strand.
Repeat and Work Down: Continue this process, adding new hair from the sides each time you cross a strand over the middle. Work your way down your head, keeping the tension even to create a neat, uniform braid.
Secure It: Once you run out of hair to add (usually around the nape of your neck, where I like to secure mine), finish with a regular three-strand braid and secure it tightly with an elastic. A strong elastic helps keep it in place all day.
If you have layers like my highlighted brown hair does, don't worry if a few wisps escape. That just adds to the soft, romantic look! Using a touch of hairspray can also help tame any flyaways, especially around your face, for a polished finish.
While the classic French braid is my absolute favorite for its timeless elegance and simplicity, there are so many other French braid ideas you can try with medium hair! A half-up French braid is fantastic for those days you want some hair down but still want to keep the front neat. You can also do two French braids for a sportier look, or even incorporate ribbons for a touch of whimsy. While some styles like 'smedium French curl braids' are popular, I find the classic version to be the most versatile and flattering for my hair type.
Braids are also great for protecting your hair, too! Mine stays much healthier when I braid it often, especially against friction. Just remember to loosen it gently at the end of the day to avoid breakage, and give your scalp a little massage. I'm so happy with how my hair growth journey is going, and the French braid is definitely a key player in keeping it healthy and stylish. If you're looking for an easy, elegant style for your medium-length hair, definitely give the classic French braid a try!
