Choosing to study abroad can be a life-changing decision that involves weighing many factors beyond just the prestige of the institution or the value of scholarships offered. In my personal experience, although I was fortunate to be offered generous scholarships from the U.S. government for bachelor's, master's, and doctoral studies, I ultimately resolved to study at the National University of Singapore (NUS) under the ASEAN Scholarship program. This decision was motivated by multiple reasons. First, the ASEAN Scholarship is remarkably comprehensive—it doesn’t just cover tuition fees but includes accommodation costs and other necessary expenses, which significantly eases financial burdens. Second, NUS is consistently ranked among the top 10 universities worldwide, offering a rich academic environment and diverse international community that nurtures holistic development. Growing up in Thailand and attending a government school without any international curriculum, I was determined since high school to study abroad to expand my cultural and academic horizons. Over the past three years, I dedicated myself to activities such as research paper writing and engaging in community projects to build a strong application profile. This preparation was crucial in securing the scholarship and adapting smoothly after arriving in Singapore. For others contemplating study abroad opportunities, especially those from ASEAN countries, I recommend exploring regional scholarships like the ASEAN Scholarship, which can provide substantial support. Additionally, consider the value of studying in a multicultural hub like Singapore, which offers proximity to home, excellent educational resources, and a gateway to global career prospects.
