Fire cards, 1957.
* Fire card * refers to the form of election corruption by "stuffing a ghost card" or a fake ballot card that has already been cast into the ballot chest one by one.
This began in the general election on February 26, 1957, during the government of Marshal Pibul.
Which was named "the dirtiest election in Thai political history."
That election was a competition between the Liberal Party, led by Marshal P.D. and Gen. Sriyanont, and the Democratic Party (the opposition, led by Mr. Kwang Pardon Wong), and the government used all its power and influence to win, threatening, forcing civil servants, and cheating elections in various ways, one of the most famous of which was the "fire card," as well as other ways like paratroopers (wearing the right of the dead and not coming) and Vian Tien (alone in many rounds).
As a result of massive cheating, the people and the students protested. The flag was lowered in half to mourn democracy. Although the Marshal P.D. declared a state of emergency, the faith deteriorated to the end of a coup by Marshal Hermit on September 16, 1957, with the immortal phrase "meet again when the nation needs it."

จากประสบการณ์การศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์การเมืองไทย ผมพบว่าเหตุการณ์ ‘ไพ่ไฟ’ ในปี พ.ศ.2500 เป็นบทเรียนสำคัญที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงความเสียหายของการทุจริตทางการเมืองที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อความเชื่อมั่นของประชาชนอย่างใหญ่หลวง ผมยังจำได้ว่าการใช้วิธี ‘ไพ่ไฟ’ หรือการยัดบัตรผีลงในหีบบัตรเลือกตั้ง เป็นการโกงที่มีความซับซ้อนและละเอียดลออ แต่ก็ถูกเปิดโปงจนกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความไม่โปร่งใสในการเลือกตั้งครั้งนั้น นอกจากนี้ยังมีวิธี ‘พลร่ม’ ที่สวมสิทธิ์คนตายหรือคนที่ไม่ได้มาใช้สิทธิ และ ‘เวียนเทียน’ คือการลงคะแนนหลายรอบโดยคนคนเดียว ซึ่งเป็นการฉ้อฉลที่ร้ายแรงไม่แพ้กัน ผลจากเหตุการณ์นี้ทำให้มีการลุกขึ้นของนิสิตนักศึกษาและประชาชน ซึ่งถือเป็นพลังทางสังคมที่สำคัญในการเรียกร้องความยุติธรรม ถึงแม้รัฐบาลจะตอบโต้ด้วยการประกาศสถานการณ์ฉุกเฉิน แต่ความไม่ไว้วางใจต่ออำนาจรัฐก็เพิ่มสูงขึ้น จนนำไปสู่การรัฐประหารโดยจอมพล สฤษดิ์ ธนะรัชต์ ที่สัญญาว่าจะเปลี่ยนแปลงประเทศด้วยวลีอมตะ ‘พบกันใหม่เมื่อชาติต้องการ’ จากมุมมองของผม เหตุการณ์ ‘ไพ่ไฟ’ ไม่ใช่แค่เรื่องในอดีต แต่ยังเป็นเครื่องเตือนใจถึงความสำคัญของการเลือกตั้งที่โปร่งใสและเป็นธรรม ซึ่งเป็นหัวใจสำคัญในการรักษาและพัฒนาประชาธิปไตยในประเทศไทยจนถึงปัจจุบัน สำหรับใครที่สนใจศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์การเมืองไทยอย่างจริงจัง ผมแนะนำให้ลองเข้าไปอ่านและวิเคราะห์เหตุการณ์ ‘ไพ่ไฟ’ อย่างละเอียด เพราะจะเห็นภาพของความท้าทายและบทเรียนที่มีคุณค่าในการพัฒนาระบบการเมืองต่อไป
