Things that feel wrong but aren’t (student edition)

5/13 Edited to

... Read moreAs a student myself, I’ve often experienced that strange feeling where being productive or relaxed triggers unexpected emotions. For instance, submitting an assignment well before the deadline can feel surreal—almost like you’re cheating the system because you’re so ahead. This early submission, while technically a smart move, sometimes feels suspicious, as if you might get caught for some hidden shortcut. It’s a weird mental trap many of us fall into, questioning why we don’t stress more or cram closer to the deadline. On the flip side, taking a nap when there’s work looming can often feel like self-sabotage. However, this type of rest is actually crucial for mental recovery and maintaining focus. Yet, guilt creeps in because societal pressure often glorifies constant work without breaks. I found that re-framing naps as strategic energy boosts instead of procrastination helped me reduce that guilt and improve my productivity later. Another aspect is finishing work early and then realizing you have free time, which can feel almost unnatural. Relaxing without a looming task feels alien, as if you’re doing something wrong by not constantly hustling. It’s important to remember that downtime is essential for a healthy balance and fuels long-term success. Interestingly, many students now use tools like ChatGPT for brainstorming ideas. While some worry this could feel like cheating, it’s really a way of enhancing creativity and efficiency, not hacking the system. Understanding that leveraging available resources smartly is part of modern student life has helped me feel less doubtful about using such tools. In summary, these contradictory feelings of suspicion when being too productive, or guilt when relaxing, are very common among students. Embracing the idea that both productivity and rest are valid and necessary can ease these psychological conflicts and lead to a healthier, more balanced student experience.
