Nursing mini Survival guide 🩺
The stuff everyone presumes you already know when you start, so knowing them helped me feel a bit more prepared 🫶 #studentnurse #placement #ehu #nurse #nhs
Starting nursing placements can feel overwhelming, but having a clear grasp of essential nursing skills makes a big difference. From my experience, mastering vital signs is foundational—not just memorizing normal ranges but understanding how subtle changes like respiratory rate often signal early deterioration. Using NEWS2 scores helped me identify when to escalate care urgently. Communication through SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) is a game-changer. Before calling a senior, preparing notes of observations and being concise and confident helped me get the support needed quickly. It also builds your confidence and professionalism. A systematic head-to-toe assessment became my safety net. Checking neurological status, respiratory effort, cardiovascular signs, and so on ensures we don’t miss anything important. Documentation alongside comparing to the patient’s baseline is key. Wound and skin care often don’t get enough emphasis in training, yet preventing pressure ulcers requires attention to skin integrity, repositioning, and nutrition. Using the '5 W’s' of wound assessment (wound size, bed, exudate, edges, odor) guided my dressing choices and reporting. Lastly, don’t hesitate to ask questions—no one expects you to know everything at the start. Learning common handover abbreviations and terms helped me communicate more effectively on wards. Overall, combining this knowledge with supportive colleagues and hands-on practice empowered me to feel more prepared and deliver safer nursing care. This survival guide is a great starting point for every student nurse embarking on clinical placements.
