Saigoku Sanjusan Kannon statues are enshrined along a unique double helix slope, and it is a very reasonable temple that worshipers can visit Sanjusan Kannon by visiting this temple. Also, by adopting a rare architectural style in the world that many worshipers can safely visit without passing each other by a one-way structure where up and down are completely different passages, its unique existence in the history of architecture was recognized and designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1995.

私が会津さざえ堂を訪れた際の体験をシェアします。梅雨明けの暑い日で気温は30度を超えており、石段を上がるのは正直厳しかったです。ですが、便利なスロープコンベアが用意されているため、無理せずゆっくりと移動できました。坂道は徐々になだらかになるので、建築の美しさに目を向けながらのんびり参拝が楽しめました。 会津さざえ堂の最大の特徴は、二重らせんのスロープでできている こと。入口から上りに一回転半、下りに一回転半、計三回転しながら参拝するしくみで、まるで巡礼の旅のような感覚が味わえます。西国三十三観音像が沿道に安置されているため、三十三観音巡礼が堂内で完結する合理的な設計が感心しました。 また、上りと下りが完全に分かれた一方通行の通路になっているため、参拝者同士がすれ違う心配がなく、安全で快適な参拝環境が保たれています。こんな斬新な建築様式は世界的にも珍しく、建築史上高く評価されているのもうなずけます。 アクセス面では、磐越自動車道の会津若松ICから車で約15分と比較的便利です。ただし、さざえ堂自体には駐車場がないため、近くにある飯盛山入口周辺の市営駐車場を利用しました。観光の拠点として飯盛山全体を回るのにも最適な立地です。 入場料金は大人400円、大学生・高校生300円、小中学生200円とリーズナブル。歴史や建築が好きな方はもちろん、家族連れや夏の暑い日にゆったりと過ごしたい方にもおすすめです。私も夏の思い出に刻みたい貴重な体験になりました。会津観光の際はぜひ訪れてみてください。
