... Read moreYou know those random, hilarious things friends say that just stick with you? Well, mine dropped a gem: 'I'm sending you rabies via WiFi.' Immediately, my artist brain went wild! It was such a bizarre, yet oddly compelling, image that I knew I had to turn it into a series of digital art pieces. The original content for this project was born from that exact moment of unexpected inspiration.
The phrase itself is pure internet absurdity, a mix of digital connection and primal fear, but presented in a darkly humorous way. That's where the 'sketchy' vibe comes in – not sketchy in a dangerous, real-world sense, but in an unconventional, slightly unsettling, and wonderfully weird artistic manner. I wanted to capture that feeling, that digital chaos, and the unexpected transmission of something wild and untamed into our highly tech-driven lives. It's truly a concept that makes you pause and think, 'What if?'
My goal was to seamlessly blend the organic world of animals with the digital realm, using a distinct 'glitchcore' and 'techcore' aesthetic. I started picturing these common, often misunderstood, urban wildlife creatures – like a white possum, a dark grey raccoon with its striped tail, a sleek grey rat, and even a cunning orange fox – in a completely new, stylized light. Instead of scurrying through backyards or city alleys, they're now aggressively attacking the very symbols of our digital connectivity: vibrant purple laptops.
The decision to have them biting into laptops was absolutely key to conveying the 'transmission' aspect of the 'Rabies Via WiFi' concept. It symbolizes an infiltration, a digital 'infection' of sorts. Imagine these creatures, usually associated with foraging and wilderness, now corrupted or influenced by a digital 'virus,' furiously gnawing away at technology. The prominent text 'Rabies Via WiFi' in a distorted, pixelated font, set against a striking teal background, reinforces this digital interference and the slightly broken, distorted reality I was aiming for with these designs. The glitch effects applied to each creature further emphasize this digital corruption, making them look like data fragments come to life.
Creating these pieces was a fascinating exploration of how we perceive threats in the modern age, which are often intangible and transmitted through networks. But beyond the conceptual, it was just plain fun to bring such a quirky and unusual idea to life! Each creature has its own unique stylized look, even with the uniform theme, adding to the individuality of the collection. The choice of a teal background was deliberate, chosen to create a vivid contrast with the purple laptops and to make the intense glitch effects on the animals truly pop and grab attention.
I really enjoyed playing with the visual contrast between the natural forms of the animals and the sharp, digital distortions. It's a subtle, yet impactful, comment on how technology infiltrates every aspect of our lives, sometimes with unexpected, wild, and even 'sketchy' results. What started as a casual joke became a whimsical, yet thought-provoking, reflection on our increasingly interconnected world, all presented through a unique artistic lens that I hope sparks some conversation.
Have you ever had a silly phrase or a random moment spark your creativity in an unexpected way? I'd love to hear about your experiences! This project truly shows how inspiration can strike from the most unexpected places, leading to something visually striking and full of character. It's all about embracing the weird and wonderful ideas that pop into our heads and running with them, transforming them into something tangible and shareable.
