I’m a gang banger!

Growing up in Las Vegas, I witnessed firsthand the complicated reality that gang culture brings to many communities. It’s not just about the violence or the stereotypes often portrayed in media. Being involved, or even just surrounded by gang activity, means navigating a world where loyalty and survival are deeply intertwined. The number 21 + 21 can symbolize more than just numbers; it reflects the unspoken codes and relationships within these groups. Everyone grows up around this, learning the rules, and trying to find their path—whether inside or outside the gang life. What I found most eye-opening was how many people joined gangs not out of pure choice but because of limited opportunities, a need for protection, or a sense of belonging. Each story behind a gang member is unique, often rooted in hardship, family struggles, or societal neglect. Las Vegas itself presents a contrasting backdrop: a city of bright lights and entertainment on one side, and neighborhoods battling economic and social challenges on the other. Understanding this duality is crucial when discussing gang culture. Reflecting on these experiences has made me realize the importance of community programs and outreach that provide alternatives and support for youth. It's key to channel energy into education, mentorship, and positive social connections. Ultimately, what I share is not glorification but an honest glimpse into a world that many people don’t fully understand. It’s about humanizing those involved and encouraging conversations that can lead to change and hope.
