As a mother living abroad with my four children, I’ve learned that maintaining strict standards when it comes to food quality is essential. It’s not just about feeding them any food available but ensuring they only consume what is genuinely good for their health. My mantra has always been: "If it’s not good, I won’t let my children eat it." In daily life as a Thai mother in America, navigating unfamiliar food environments can be challenging. Sometimes, certain food items are questionable, and it’s tempting to offer them to children to avoid waste. However, I always remind myself that it’s better to consume that food myself rather than compromise my children’s well-being. This approach reinforces my commitment to their health while also sending a powerful message about food quality. The experience of living overseas has made me more mindful about nutrition and food safety. It’s not uncommon to face cultural differences in dietary habits, but protecting my children’s health is a universal priority. I’ve found that involving my children in meal preparation and educating them about healthy eating helps develop their awareness and appreciation for good nutrition. Sharing meals that are both nutritious and delicious has strengthened our family bonds. While I strive to maintain a connection to our Thai heritage through cooking traditional dishes, I also adapt to the local food culture by carefully selecting ingredients that meet my standards. Ultimately, parenting abroad comes with its challenges, but prioritizing quality food has been a non-negotiable part of my mothering journey.
