Your Postpartum Body Common Postpartum Changes

Similar to how your body changed during pregnancy, you can also expect some changes postpartum.

Some of these changes happen shortly after birth, while others unfold over a span of months.

Hair

Around 3 to 6 months after birth, your hormone levels drop off and you may start losing hair. It may come out in clumps while you shower or while brushing your hair.

Night Sweats

If you are waking up in the middle of the night in a puddle of sweat, do not panic. Night sweats are normal during the first few weeks.

They are the result of changing hormones and excess fluid in your body from pregnancy. Your body no longer needs this fluid after birth, so it rids it through sweat and urine.

Skin

Maybe you developed linea nigra (the dark line that extends down the belly), birthmarks, or scars that became darker. These changes occurred because your body produced more melanin (the pigment that gives your skin color) during pregnancy. Most of these skin changes fade away shortly after childbirth.

Swelling

You may experience some swelling in your legs and feet after birth. To reduce swelling, drink water and elevate your legs. Swelling of the face and limbs can also be a sign of postpartum preeclampsia

Varicose Veins

Genetics and hormonal changes during pregnancy are responsible for these tiny dilated blood vessels near the skin's surface in your legs.

Varicose veins eventually become less visible, but it can take several months.

Weight Loss

It is possible to lose up to 20 pounds in the first month. But a more realistic number is closer to 10 to 12 pounds, depending on your body type. If you are breastfeeding, you may lose weight a little faster.

... Read moreAfter childbirth, many women experience various physical changes that can be surprising and sometimes distressing. Key changes include hair loss, often triggered by a drop in hormone levels around three to six months postpartum. This shedding is commonly temporary and may resolve on its own. Night sweats are also prevalent in the weeks following delivery. These episodes are typically attributed to hormonal shifts and the body's need to expel excess fluid. While uncomfortable, they are a normal part of the postpartum experience. Other changes might involve your skin, where existing marks and new ones may darken due to increased melanin production during pregnancy, but most fade after childbirth. Additionally, many women face swelling in their legs and feet, a condition that can improve with hydration and leg elevation. In some cases, prolonged swelling may indicate postpartum preeclampsia, which requires medical attention. Varicose veins, resulting from hormonal changes and genetic predisposition, may also develop, but these typically diminish over several months. When it comes to weight, losing up to 20 pounds within the first month can happen, especially for breastfeeding moms; however, every woman’s body recovers differently. Understanding these changes can empower women during their recovery journey, providing reassurance and encouraging them to seek support if needed.
