Set Your Newborn Appearance Expectations

Nothing is more beautiful than your newborn, but don’t be surprised if your baby's appearance right after birth is different than you imagined.

Common newborn characteristics:

• A cone-shaped head, formed during birth

• Fontanelles: the soft spots on the head where the bones will eventually join together

• A newborn rash or red splotches on the skin

• Milia: tiny white bumps on the face that go away with time

• Stork bites: patches of deep-pink skin on the face and neck

• Bluish-green or gray birthmark (commonly called a Mongolian spot): this birthmark is usually found on the lower back or buttocks

• Skin tone that may be paler than yours if you have dark skin

• Swelling in the genital area

• Vaginal discharge or blood spotting in girls

... Read moreAs a new parent, it's completely natural to scrutinize every inch of your precious newborn. I know I did! And while you're filled with love, you might also notice some physical characteristics that weren't quite what you expected from those picture-perfect baby photos. I certainly had a few moments of concern, but I quickly learned that many of these are perfectly normal and temporary. When my little one arrived, I was definitely surprised by their head shape! It looked a bit elongated, and I immediately worried. But I quickly learned that a 'cone-shaped head' or molding is completely normal, especially after a vaginal birth. It happens because the soft bones of a newborn's skull are designed to overlap to help them pass through the birth canal. Usually, this reshapes itself within a few days or weeks as the baby lies down, and the pressure on their head evens out. It's rarely a cause for concern unless it's very severe or doesn't improve over several weeks – then it's always good to chat with your pediatrician. Another thing that caught me off guard was seeing a little bit of vaginal discharge or even a tiny amount of blood spotting in my baby girl's diaper. As a new mom, my heart raced! But again, my doctor reassured me this is a common, normal occurrence. It's often referred to as 'pseudo-menstruation' and is caused by the withdrawal of maternal hormones that crossed the placenta during pregnancy. Once these hormones clear from the baby's system, which can take a few days to a week or two, this spotting typically stops. Just keep the area clean, and if it's heavy or persists, consult your doctor. Along with the discharge, I also noticed some swelling in my newborn's genital area. This can happen in both baby boys and girls. For boys, their scrotum might appear larger than you'd expect, and for girls, the labia might look puffy. Just like the vaginal discharge, this swelling is often due to the residual maternal hormones and extra fluid retention from birth. It's usually temporary and resolves on its own within the first few days or weeks. Again, maintaining good hygiene is key, and if you have any concerns about excessive swelling or discoloration, it's always best to get a professional opinion. Beyond these, don't be alarmed by other common skin characteristics. Those tiny white bumps on the face? That's most likely *milia*, which are simply clogged pores and disappear on their own without treatment. Stork bites (pink marks) on the nape of the neck, eyelids, or forehead are also very common capillary malformations that usually fade. Even a bluish-green or gray *Mongolian spot*, often on the lower back or buttocks, is a harmless type of birthmark that typically fades over time. And yes, skin tone might look different at first; it takes a little while for a baby's true skin tone to develop, especially if you have darker skin, their initial appearance might be paler than you expect. It's easy to get overwhelmed by all these new observations, but remember, every newborn is unique, and many initial appearances are simply part of their adjustment to the world outside the womb. Trust your instincts, but also know that many of these temporary characteristics are perfectly normal. If you're ever worried or something just doesn't feel right, don't hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician. They are there to provide guidance and peace of mind during this incredible journey!

Yes! So many parents don't know about these. I think it should be talked about at prenatal visits, like at 30 weeks or so.
