Being a nurse changes you in ways that are hard to explain unless you’ve lived it.
You don’t just learn skills.
You don’t just learn medicine.
You learn how fragile time really is.
I’ve watched people reach the end of their lives and realize that what hurt most wasn’t what they did wrong —
it was what they waited too long to do.
Waiting to travel.
Waiting to go.
Waiting to feel ready.
Waiting for “someday.”
There’s a moment that stays with you as a nurse.
It’s quiet.
It’s not dramatic.
It’s when you realize that once someone is in that bed, time stops negotiating.
There are no do-overs.
No “after this.”
No “next year.”
And that does something to you.
It changes how long you’re willing to wait.
It changes how much uncertainty you’re willing to tolerate.
It changes what you’re willing to postpone for comfort, fear, or systems that keep you in limbo.
I’m 37.
I’ve spent years being patient.
Years waiting for clarity.
Years waiting for stability.
Years believing that if I just held on long enough, things would eventually settle.
But nursing teaches you something very clearly:
waiting is not neutral.
Waiting has a cost.
I don’t want my life to end with “I wish I had.”
I don’t want to look back and realize that fear or uncertainty made my decisions for me.
I don’t want to postpone living until my body or my circumstances decide for me.
So I stopped waiting.
Not impulsively.
Not angrily.
But intentionally.
This chapter is about choosing life while it’s still mine to choose.
About honoring what nursing taught me.
About listening when life keeps whispering, “Now.”
