Number one question about our dogs

Read moreOkay, so you’ve seen the adorable faces of English Cream Golden Retrievers like my Maverick and Jet, and you’re probably thinking, ‘They’re beautiful, but do they shed that much?’ Well, let me give you the honest, unfiltered truth from a Golden Retriever parent: Yes, they absolutely do, and often more than you might expect! But trust me, every bit of fur is worth it for the love and joy these dogs bring into your life. When people ask me about my Goldens, the first question is almost always about shedding. It's not just 'a bit' as some might casually say; sometimes, it feels like a never-ending snowstorm of light-colored dog hair! Especially during spring and fall, when they 'blow their coat,' you'll find small clumps of fur in every corner. I’ve even gathered a 'very large pile of shed fur' after a good brushing – it's just part of the Golden Retriever charm! Their beautiful double coat, designed to protect them, is the main reason. So, how do you manage this abundant shedding? It's all about routine and the right tools. Brushing is your best friend. I try to brush Maverick and Jet daily, or at least every other day, with a good de-shedding tool like a Furminator or a slicker brush. This pulls out loose undercoat before it ends up on your furniture and floors. During heavy shedding seasons, I often brush them outside to contain the fur-nado! Bathing also helps. A good bath with a de-shedding shampoo, followed by a thorough rinse and blow-dry, can loosen a lot of dead hair. Just be careful not to over-bathe. I aim for once a month, or whenever they get particularly muddy. Beyond grooming, their diet plays a big role. A high-quality diet rich in omega fatty acids can lead to a healthier coat and potentially less excessive shedding. I’ve heard of supplements like fish oil, but always check with your vet first. And for the house? Invest in a good vacuum cleaner! Robotic vacuums that run daily are lifesavers for keeping those light-colored dog hair clumps at bay. For clothes and furniture, lint rollers become your constant companion. I've learned to embrace dog hair as a fashion accessory! Despite the constant battle against fur, I wouldn't trade my English Cream Golden Retrievers for anything. Their gentle nature, loyalty, and boundless energy fill our home with so much joy. The shedding is a small price to pay for such incredible companionship. If you're considering one, be prepared for the fur, but also for the most loving and devoted friend you could ever ask for!
