How I like bully myself…. #Marathon #Runner

2024/12/3 Edited to

... Read moreRunning a marathon is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. When I say I 'bully' myself, it's not about being harsh, but about cultivating a relentless mental toughness that refuses to give up, even when my body is screaming for a break. It's about finding that inner strength to push past discomfort, mile after brutal mile, until I cross that glorious finish line. If you're looking to conquer your next marathon and truly 'bully' the course, here are some strategies that have worked for me. First, let's talk about the mental game – it’s where most marathons are won or lost. I practice visualization weeks before the race. I picture myself running strong, managing pain, and ultimately, crossing that finish line, just like the one at a "Festival of Races" with other runners cheering. When the going gets tough during the actual race, I break it down into smaller, manageable chunks. Instead of thinking about the remaining 10 miles, I focus on getting to the next aid station, or running just one more song on my playlist. Positive self-talk is crucial; I replace any negative thoughts with affirmations like, "You've trained for this," or "You are strong enough." This mental 'bullying' of negative thoughts keeps me moving forward. Next, the physical preparation needs discipline. To 'bully' the marathon effectively, you need to have 'bullied' your body in training. This means consistent long runs, speed work to build resilience, and strength training to prevent injuries. Don't skip those hydration and nutrition practices during training; understanding how your body responds to fuel and fluid, especially when using a hydration vest like mine, is key. On race day, I stick to my plan rigorously. Pacing is paramount – starting too fast is a common mistake. I tell myself to hold back in the early miles, conserving energy for when I really need to 'bully' through the later stages. Finally, race day execution and overcoming those inevitable tough spots are where the magic happens. Around miles 20-22, the infamous 'wall' can hit. This is where all that mental training comes into play. I remember how hard I worked to get to this point. I focus on my breathing, take in an extra gel or some electrolytes, and remind myself that this pain is temporary, but the accomplishment is forever. Seeing other runners, hearing the crowd, and knowing that the "Festival of Races" finish line is getting closer all contribute to that final push. It's about embracing the discomfort and using it as fuel. When I finally see that archway, hear the cheers, and know I'm about to cross, it’s an unbeatable feeling. That moment of triumph over myself, over the miles, that’s what makes all the 'bullying' worth it.

Half Marathon Training Plan
Last week I ran my first half marathon in almost 2 years!! I had taken a break from longer distances and stuck to 5 and 10Ks for a while since that’s what I enjoy most! But training for this half helped me get motivated to do longer runs and actually ignited a new love for longer (for me) runs!
