MULCH MULCH MULCH

✨Covering your soil with mulch helps prevent soil from splashing back onto the leaves of your edible plants during watering or rain, greatly reducing the chances of soil borne diseases spreading in the garden.

✨Mulching suppresses weeds... which, we can all

admit is a big WIN!

... Read moreHi fellow gardeners! If you're like me, you've probably faced the frustration of leaves curling even after watering, or seeing your precious soil dry out so quickly, especially in a hot climate. I've learned that sometimes, simply watering isn't enough, and exposed soil can result in dead soil that's prone to dry out quicker. That's where mulching comes in – it’s been an absolute game-changer for my garden! You might be asking, "what is mulching exactly?" In simple terms, mulching is covering the surface of your soil with a layer of material. Think of it as a protective blanket for your garden beds. Beyond just looking neat, this practice offers incredible benefits. My original post touched on preventing soil splash and suppressing weeds, but there’s so much more to it, especially when it comes to natural mulching. For me, the biggest win has been moisture retention. In our baking hot climate, I found that my mulch may not be enough if it's too thin or the wrong type. That's why adding a good layer is crucial. It acts as a barrier, significantly reducing water evaporation from the soil surface. This means you water less frequently, saving both time and precious resources. It's a lifesaver for keeping plants hydrated and happy through those scorching summer days. Now, let's talk about best mulch to suppress weeds. Oh, the joy of fewer weeds! A thick layer of mulch blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, preventing them from germinating. For those persistent weeds that do manage to sprout, they’re usually much easier to pull out from the loose, moist soil beneath the mulch. I’ve found that materials like straw or composted hay are fantastic for this – they not only smother weeds but also break down over time, enriching your soil. Speaking of enrichment, I even add cow manure to my beds which my plants absolutely love! There are various types of natural mulches. Besides straw and composted hay, wood chips are excellent for long-term use, breaking down slowly and providing steady organic matter. Shredded leaves are another free and effective option, mimicking nature's own mulching process. While some people use a plastic mulch layer, especially for specific crop warming, I personally prefer organic mulches for my home garden. They not only suppress weeds and retain moisture but also improve soil health by adding organic matter as they decompose. This creates a thriving environment for beneficial soil microbes, leading to stronger, healthier plants. Plus, they look so much more natural and inviting! When applying mulch, aim for a layer of about 2-4 inches deep. Be sure to keep it a few inches away from the stems or trunks of your plants to prevent moisture buildup and potential rot. Regular top-ups might be needed as the mulch breaks down, but it’s a small effort for such significant rewards. Trust me, once you start mulching properly, you'll wonder how you ever gardened without it. Your plants will thank you, and your back will too from all the reduced weeding!
