Bending Subsets

Okay, so I totally agree with the original post – Yun from the Kyoshi novels was something else! 😭 He was a menace, yes, but his earthbending skills were absolutely mind-blowing and really highlighted how diverse bending can get. It got me thinking about all the incredible bending subsets we see across the Avatar universe. There's so much more than just the basics, and honestly, some of these advanced techniques are what make the show and books so captivating! Let's talk about earth bending first, because that's where Yun really shined. Beyond what we usually see, there’s Sand Bending, which is a fascinating, almost easy form of earth bending. It's all about manipulating the tiny minerals and impurities within the sand itself. Think about the Sandbender tribes in the desert – so ingenious! Then, of course, there's Metal Bending, famously created by the legendary Toph Beifong. It’s not about bending the metal directly, but the tiny bits of earth trapped inside it. Such a game-changer! And who could forget Lava Bending? This incredibly rare sub-bending ability lets earthbenders liquify earth into scorching hot lava. It’s seen with powerful benders like Bolin and Ghazan, and it’s always spectacular to watch. While "Avatar Szeto lavabending" sometimes comes up in discussions, it's important to remember that lavabending is an Earthbending skill, and Szeto was a Fire Avatar, though Avatars can master all elements. Speaking of Yun, his unique abilities were truly next-level. The Kyoshi novels really delved into his mastery, showcasing his incredible Transmutation, Pigmentation, and even Glass Bending! These aren't your everyday moves. And his Seismic Sense? That’s probably one of the most iconic earthbending moves out there, allowing benders to 'see' through vibrations in the ground. It’s such a powerful tool for any earthbender, providing an unparalleled awareness of their surroundings. Moving on to fire bending, there are some seriously cool sub bendings too! We have Lightning Bending, which was once considered incredibly rare and reserved for the Fire Nation elite, but has become more common, especially with people like Zuko’s daughter, Izumi, mastering it. The lethality of it really depends on the bender's control and intent. But for sheer explosive power, nothing beats Combustion Bending. This extremely rare fire bending sub-skill involves focusing chi through a third eye on the forehead to generate powerful, explosive blasts. Characters like Combustion Man and P'Li definitely made an impact with this terrifying ability! And that’s not all! There are even more specialized skills like Steam Bending (a sub-skill of water bending), Lightning Redirection (a defensive fire bending technique), and even spiritual abilities like Spiritual Divination.
