Narcissist don’t listen….Walk away.

2025/2/20 Edited to

... Read moreIt's incredibly tough when you realize you're in a situation where someone simply doesn't listen, especially when you suspect you're dealing with a narcissist. I remember countless times trying to explain my feelings, only to be met with blank stares, deflection, or even blame. It felt like talking to a brick wall, and honestly, it was exhausting. That's when I discovered the most powerful 'trick' in my arsenal: sometimes, the only thing you can do is just walk away. This isn't about being rude or giving up easily; it's about self-preservation. Narcissists, whether overt or covert, often lack the empathy required for healthy two-way communication. Their world revolves around their needs and perceptions, making genuine listening or understanding nearly impossible. They thrive on control and attention, and engaging with their circular arguments only feeds their ego while draining yours. I've learned that continuing to plead your case or hoping they'll suddenly see your side is a futile exercise that only prolongs your distress. 'Walking away' isn't always about packing your bags and leaving forever, though sometimes that's absolutely necessary. It can also mean walking away emotionally from a conversation that's spiraling into verbal abuse or emotional abuse. It's about disengaging from their manipulative tactics, refusing to be drawn into their drama, and setting firm boundaries. If they try to belittle you, invalidate your feelings, or engage in unhealthy communication, you have the right—and the responsibility to yourself—to step back. I used to feel immense guilt for not 'fixing' things or for 'abandoning' someone. But then I realized that my own peace was constantly being shattered. My energy was depleted, and my mental health was suffering. The choice became clear: protect your peace. This means prioritizing your well-being over trying to gain understanding from someone fundamentally incapable of providing it. It means recognizing when you're caught in abusive relationships, or even just emotionally draining interactions, and bravely choosing a path that leads to healing. If you're constantly feeling unheard, invalidated, or verbally abused, consider this your sign. You don't have to stand there and take it. You don't owe anyone your emotional labor if it's not reciprocated. Learning to walk away is a profound act of self-love and reclaiming your power. It's not about revenge; it's about rescuing yourself from a cycle that serves no one but the narcissist. Trust your gut. If a situation consistently leaves you feeling worse, it's time to explore what 'walking away' looks like for you, in whatever form it needs to take.

5 things a narcissist does when you don't ask permission
One of the clearest signs that something isn't healthy is how someone responds when you think independently. Not when you ask for advice. Not when you need help. When you simply bring an idea to the table as an equal. Healthy people may agree with it. Disagree with it. Build on it.
