Support your local libraries

Hey Book Besties.

Let’s talk public libraries for a second.

Public libraries are treasure troves for so many things. They contain books for adventures and books for learning. They usually have computers and free WiFi that you can use to do school work, apply for jobs, or anything else you need if you’re unable to afford your own computer or internet at home. Many have music and movies you can check out. Some libraries have access to things like game systems and video games you can borrow. Some have programs that can provide discounted tickets for places like the zoos or museums. They can contain local history in terms of artifacts, old newspapers you can look at through microfilm or microfiche, and other means. They host local events, activities for adults and children. Some provide free lunches for children if you need it. Story time for kids. Movie nights. They have meeting rooms and study rooms. They’re amazing.

Public libraries are a godsend. They don’t get nearly enough credit or support that they should. They need more funding but certain people out there believe otherwise. They don’t think libraries are important enough. But they are. The one of the most important things out there.

If you don’t go to the library often, I encourage you to go. Look up and see what they offer. You may find some event you are interested in for yourself or your kids.

I went to the library to work on some writing and then I went ahead and browsed the books. I ended up grabbing three, lol. On Wings of Blood has been on my TBR for a while. The other two books were not, but they peaked my interest. I’m going to finish the book I am currently focusing on then work on these.

Love your libraries. Visit your libraries. Support your libraries (even if it’s just grabbing a library card—it shows people are interested in the library).

Happy Wednesday and happy reading y’all.

... Read moreVisiting your local library can truly be a transformative experience, beyond just borrowing books. From personal experience, libraries often have quiet study spaces that create the perfect environment for focused work or creative projects, something I’ve benefited from many times. The availability of free WiFi and public computers also makes a huge difference for those who might not have access at home, allowing people to apply for jobs, complete school assignments, or simply stay connected. Public libraries continuously evolve to meet community needs. For example, some now offer unique lending programs for things like video games or even specialized equipment. I recently discovered how borrowing game consoles or educational kits can provide entertainment and learning opportunities without any extra cost. Events are another key highlight—children’s story times, movie nights, and informative workshops help bring communities together. These programs support literacy, lifelong learning, and social interaction in a welcoming space. One fascinating aspect is the preservation of local history through archives, microfilm newspapers, and artifacts. This often-overlooked resource helps people connect with their town’s heritage and cultural identity. The book "On Wings of Blood" mentioned is an example of titles you can unexpectedly find during a library visit. Such serendipitous finds keep reading fresh and exciting. In my experience, simply having a library card opens doors, showing support for public services and encouraging funding. Visiting regularly, participating in events, or recommending the library to friends are all simple steps that help maintain these invaluable community institutions. Supporting libraries means supporting education, culture, and accessibility for everyone. I encourage you to explore your local library offerings—you might be pleasantly surprised by what’s available and how it enriches your life.
