This harmful ideology that remains in some communities tries to promote racial purity by discouraging relationships outside certain bloodlines, which ironically is a form of inbreeding and exclusion. From conversations and observations, it’s evident that Mexicans, like all people worldwide, come in a wide range of appearances, reflecting a blend of indigenous, African, European, and other ancestries that cannot be simplified into a single racial category. Understanding this has shaped how I view identity and inclusion. Instead of viewing Mexican culture or nationality as a race, it's more accurate and respectful to recognize it as a vibrant culture and heritage shaped by history, traditions, language, and values. This mindset helps challenge arrogant, uneducated points of view about racial hierarchies and promotes unity. For instance, during social events like FIFA World Cup parties, when people see expressions of connection across racial or cultural lines—such as a Mexican woman kissing an African man—some react with confusion or judgment based on outdated notions. It's essential to educate ourselves and others about how colonial narratives have influenced racial perceptions and to actively reject ideas like "whitewashing history." Only through this kind of reflection and openness can we foster better understanding among diverse peoples and celebrate the beautiful variety inherent in Mexican identity and beyond.
