... Read moreNavigating life with AuDHD (the overlap of ADHD and Autism) means recognizing the unique blend of traits from both conditions. For me, understanding this helped me find better ways to manage my daily experiences. For example, I realized that my need for routine and order especially spikes when I feel stressed, which helps me consciously create supportive structures. One significant aspect is recognizing how stimming—repetitive movements, sounds, or thoughts—helps me regulate emotions and focus. Though often misunderstood, stimming is an important self-soothing tool that keeps me grounded. I've found that identifying and honoring these behaviors improves my overall well-being. The intersectionality also includes challenges like alexithymia, affecting my ability to identify and communicate my emotions directly, and a tendency to hyperfocus on interests over extended periods. While this can be a strength in deepening knowledge and skills, it sometimes makes shifting attention or coping with unpredictability difficult. From my experience, awareness of how anxiety shows up in this neurodivergent framework has been crucial. Signs like freezing up, excessive worry about engaging in special interests, or feeling overwhelmed with unpredictability are common and require compassionate self-care strategies. Understanding and visually mapping these overlapping traits, such as with diagrams, helped me connect the dots between ADHD and autism characteristics, improving self-awareness and acceptance. Sharing this knowledge can support others discovering their own neurodivergent identities and promote empathy in broader communities.
