Play Couch Build Ideas: part 1! ✨
🙃 Am I the only one who loves building things with my son’s toys for him to play with?
Like I love setting up scenes or ways for him to play pretend. LEGOs, mangetic blocks, play couches… all the things.
So I thought I’d share a little series on some of our play couch builds, or maybe some of the other ways we set up the playroom to encourage pretend play! So here’s the first one: The excavator! 🦺
We have an 8 piece couch and used all of the pieces in this one.

Building things with my son's play couch has honestly become one of my favorite ways to spend time together. There’s something so magical about seeing his eyes light up when we transform a few foam pieces into an exciting new world. Just like our recent excavator play couch build – it brought hours of focused pretend play, and seeing him "digging" was just priceless! If you’re wondering why play couch builds are such a hit, let me tell you, it’s not just about keeping them busy. These versatile pieces of furniture are champions of open-ended play. They encourage creativity, problem-solving skills, and even gross motor development as kids climb, crawl, and arrange the cushions. It’s amazing how a simple set of foam blocks can become anything their imagination desires, from a cozy reading nook to a bustling construction site. When it comes to coming up with new play couch build ideas, I've learned a few tricks. First, don't overthink it! Sometimes the simplest structures spark the most imaginative play. Secondly, involve your little one in the process. Ask them what they want to build. Even if their ideas seem wild, trying to bring them to life together is half the fun and really boosts their sense of accomplishment. Remember, there's no right or wrong way to build. The beauty of a play couch is its adaptability! Beyond the excavator we just shared, our play couch has been a rocket ship soaring to the moon, a pirate ship sailing the high seas, and even a cozy cave where we've read countless stories. We've built towering castles, intricate obstacle courses, and even simple tunnels for crawling practice. Each new build offers a fresh adventure and a chance to explore different scenarios. Think about common themes your child loves – animals, vehicles, characters – and try to create a structure that fits. To really enhance the pretend play, I always suggest adding a few props. A blanket draped over a build can instantly turn it into a secret hideout. Small toys can become characters in the story. For our excavator, we brought out some small construction vehicles and blocks, and suddenly, he was a foreman on a busy construction site! Asking open-ended questions like "What are you building here?" or "Where are we going in our rocket ship?" can also really fuel their imagination. Ultimately, these play couch build ideas are more than just temporary structures; they're springboards for endless creativity and connection. It’s about fostering an environment where imagination can run wild and creating those special, memorable moments with our kids. Don't be afraid to get down on the floor and join in the fun – you might be surprised at how much joy you find in building a temporary masterpiece!
