How to Add LED Lights to Your Ceiling

I hated how unfinished just adding LED lights looked to the top of my ceiling, so I got this foam crown moulding that lets you hide the light strip, but still glow!

Here what we used:

1: Creative Crown Moulding - made of foam, has a groove for light strips, lightweight, precut, and easy to install!

2: Govee light strips - one 32ft and one 16ft.

3: White paint

4: Caulking

5: Saw

6: Wall adhesive

We cut the pieces to size using a saw, and actually glued them to the wall! We left about an inch and a half between the crown moulding and the ceiling so the light would glow upwards. Then caulked our corners, painted a coat of white paint, and added the light strip once it all dried.

This DIY hack isn't just about aesthetics; it's also incredibly practical, especially if you're like me and want to avoid complex electrical wiring! One of the best things about LED light strips is that they’re typically low-voltage. This means you don't need an electrician to hardwire them into your home's electrical system. Most come with an adhesive backing and simply plug into a standard wall outlet with an adapter. This makes the whole process of adding ambient lighting to your ceiling, like those cool purple and blue LED lights I love, so much easier and safer for a DIYer. No drilling through walls for new wiring – just peel, stick, and plug in! Beyond the 'no wiring' convenience, let's talk about the magic of these lights. The upward glow from behind the molding creates an incredible ambient effect, totally transforming the mood of any room. Think about your gaming setup or a cozy playroom – you can instantly switch from bright white utility light to a vibrant, immersive atmosphere. Playing with different colors and brightness settings through a remote or a smart app truly makes your ceiling a dynamic piece of decor. If you're looking for other creative ways to light up your ceiling and create unique atmospheres, have you heard about DIY cloud ceilings? While my method uses crown molding, cloud ceilings are another popular trend for achieving a dreamy, atmospheric glow. They often involve attaching fluffy material (like polyester fiberfill) to a ceiling, then strategically placing LED strips behind or within the 'clouds' to mimic a sky or a magical scene. It’s a different look, but it shares that same DIY spirit and desire for an enchanting ambient effect without needing complex electrical work. Imagine pairing a subtle hidden LED glow around the room with a smaller cloud feature in the center! When choosing your materials, don't just grab any LED strip. Look for ones with good adhesive, a decent length for your room (like the 32ft and 16ft strips I used), and a remote or smart control for easy color changes. And for the molding, that foam crown molding with a built-in groove is a game-changer – it makes hiding the strip so much neater. Hope these extra tips help you create your perfect illuminated space!
