I don’t care what no one says, Kpop is my safe space
🤍 My Story:
In 2009 my friend showed me Haru Haru by Big Bang for the first time, and the emotions they were able to convey despite me knowing 0 Korean, intrigued me. We started learning Korean, watching variety shows (similar to reality shows) and finding new kpop songs. I went so far as to create a kpop club in high school to learn the dances and perform them at rallies & talent competitions. Every other Friday when my dad went out and mom went to bowling club, I would be in the living room, projector hooked up to my laptop and I would be watching music videos. In college, I met a friend through dance class and we practiced and danced to multiple songs.
I performed a mix I made at my County Fair & even attended SM Kpop audition in Los Angeles.
In 2013, I joined the military and my love for dance and kpop followed me. I made covers in the gym. In 2016 when I moved out the dorms and had my own apartment, I remember buying my first curved tv for $400 at Walmart, and the first thing I played was Highlight by Seventeen. From 2017 to 2018, I moved to Korea and my entire life changed. I was so happy and comfortable. I met another friend who liked kpop and dancing, and we would be out every other weekend going to concerts. 2019 I went to BlackPink concert and remembered rapping BTS Cypher 4 to a co-worker, like it was the hottest rap out there. In 2020, I fell off from kpop after Itzy debuted and haven’t listened to it until 2025!
And here I am, Saturday night listening to 2nd Generation Kpop and watching music shows , music videos and dancing. I miss dancing so much; Kpop dance gave me so much confidence and happiness. I miss being with people that get it and understand what I’m saying.
🤍 My Takeaways: whenever I feel myself getting depressed or sad or lonely, I revert back to kpop because I listened to it and learned the dances by myself since I was young. And I guess if I can get through that, I can get through anything really.

It's totally understandable to feel that connection. K-pop really does have a way of lifting spirits and bringing people together😭
