I am so excited for this series from Neva! I have been anticipating it all year. Starting off with Roman and Nina's feisty daughter just seems meant to be. I thought Vasilisa had so much spunk and love how she was ready to fight tooth and nail right from the beginning.
Rafael is our scarred, grump of a crime boss. When he sends his men to "take care of" the hacker who has been messing up his businesses, he isn't expecting the spitfire he finds in his basement torture room. And he really isn't expecting the anger he feels at the marks his men put on her. He thinks its just his protectiveness of women, but we know better.
He comes up with a plan to keep her close to him: fix what she broke in his systems. Only, it soon becomes clear that no time is going to be enough. Especially when sparks start to fly. I thought these two played very well off each other, and there was a lot of push and pull. This book felt a lot longer than many of the previous Perfectly Imperfect books.
I loved all the chemistry and seeing Vasya pick at him until they both snap and devour one another was delightful. I liked them together a lot.
The only other thing that just... ate at me, and why this wasn't a 5 star read for me... It's something that many second generation series suffer from and that is making the original couples look a bit dim.. like, if Vasya has run away from her father multiple times.. I don't buy it for a second that he wouldn't have a tracker or more people watching her. I also don't think it would have taken months to find her.
And finally, the "big moment" with Seirgei at the climax.. just.. how would Rafael survive that? Why did it get to that point? I know "romance reasons" is what I'm supposed to believe. But this is why second generation stories are so hard to pull off. Because it makes heroes we love in the original series look either weak or ineffectual.
Looking forward to the next couple!

... Read moreOkay, so after diving deep into Neva Altaj's 'Beautiful Beast' (seriously, that book cover with the tattooed hand and suit? Iconic!), I've been thinking a lot about why we're all so obsessed with mafia romance novels. For me, it's the ultimate forbidden love story – the danger, the power dynamics, and that undeniable pull between characters who shouldn't be together. It's not just about the 'mafia' aspect; it's about the intense emotional journey and the high stakes that come with it. When you're dealing with crime bosses and their intricate, often brutal, worlds, every emotion is amplified.
What makes a mafia romance truly click for me? It's often the 'grumpy boss, sunshine heroine' trope, or when the heroine, like Vasilisa in 'Beautiful Beast,' is a total spitfire who challenges the powerful hero. There's something incredibly captivating about a formidable crime boss developing feelings for someone who totally disrupts his world. It’s that tension, that 'will-they-won't-they' with incredibly high stakes, that keeps me turning pages until 3 AM! I adore how these stories often explore themes of loyalty, betrayal, and redemption, all wrapped up in a fiery romance.
When you're looking for your next mafia romance read, keep an eye out for certain elements. Do you prefer age-gap romance, or second-generation stories like 'Beautiful Beast' that revisit beloved characters? Are you into enemies-to-lovers, or more of an arranged marriage setup? The 'mafia romance novel' genre is so diverse! And let's not forget the book covers – they often tell you a lot about the vibe. Dark, moody aesthetics with hints of luxury, maybe a glimpse of a mysterious figure, a tattooed hand, or a sharp suit, are pretty standard for books like 'Beautiful Beast' by Neva Altaj. These covers often promise the intensity and drama that the genre is known for.
Personally, I'm always on the hunt for a book where the mafia boss has a hidden soft spot, even if he's outwardly ruthless. That transformation, that vulnerability, is what makes these stories so addictive. It's the contrast between their dangerous public persona and their tender private moments that really gets me. If you loved the intensity and unique dynamics of 'Beautiful Beast,' you might also enjoy exploring other authors who master this genre. Think of authors like Cora Reilly, who often delves into arranged marriages within the mafia, or Sophie Lark, known for her darker, grittier takes. And don't forget Lylah James, whose 'The Mafia and His Angel' series is a fan favorite for its passionate and dramatic storytelling. Each brings their own unique twist to 'mafia love stories,' proving there’s always a new boss to fall for, or a new challenge for our resilient heroines to face. It’s definitely a genre that keeps you on the edge of your seat, always wondering how these characters will navigate their dangerous world while also finding love against all odds. These stories often leave you thinking about the characters long after you've closed the book, eager for the next installment or a similar read.
The cover is stunning 🔥
