About my first YouTube video.

As long as I can remember I’ve wanted to have a YouTube channel and post videos. For a long time I had no idea what I’d post about or had random ideas that never really became anything. But when I started diving deeper into my crafts, I realized that could be my channel!

At the time of starting my channel (August 2022, my main thing people in different circles knew me for was candle making and wax melts. This was mainly because I had done so much research to make them myself, I got really good at helping beginners. So, my first YouTube video (which this photo was one of the ones I took that would have been my thumbnail) was about candle colorants! I chose that because I saw SO many people asking if they could use other wax melts for color, crayons, alcohol inks, etc. and I wanted to make sure people had some good info to get started!

It wasn’t easy for me though. I had to figure out how I was going to film and make sure I could see that I was in focus from a distance since I’m visually impaired. So, I ended up using the magnifier built into my phone to zoom in periodically. Another helpful thing for this was having the Sony ZV-1. This camera is SO smart and kept track of my face and eyes so well I now know I don’t even really NEED to check either.

I got into as much detail as I could in my videos and I did A roll and B roll with a decent amount of editing the two together as I was taught in college (I have a degree in broadcasting and advertising and a certification in digital media). And this has definitely set me apart from at least a few others in the same niche on YouTube!

I was also terrified to start my channel too. I kept finding reasons to NOT do it, but after that first video it got a lot better!

Technical challenges are common, especially for creators with visual impairments. Utilizing tools like smartphone magnifiers and advanced cameras can drastically improve filming quality.
