I used to grab whatever looked good on the shelf... until I started reading ingredient labels.

Now there are a handful of ingredients I personally choose to avoid when shopping for my family. ❤️

This isn't about being perfect, and it's definitely not about judging anyone else's grocery cart. We all have different priorities. These are simply the choices that work for our home.

... Read moreWhen I first started paying closer attention to ingredient labels, I found myself surprised by how many additives and hidden ingredients are in the foods I used to buy without a second thought. One of the main things I avoid are hydrogenated oils and trans fats, which can contribute to inflammation and other health issues. I also stay clear of artificial dyes and colors, such as those found in colorful cereals and fruit snacks, because they often contain synthetic compounds that some studies have linked to behavioral issues in children. Refined sugars like high fructose corn syrup and dextrose are also on my skip list, as they can spike blood sugar levels and contribute to long-term health problems. I opt for natural sweeteners or foods with no added sugars whenever possible. Additionally, I try to avoid products containing enriched flour and certain texturizing agents like sodium bicarbonate and acacia gum, as these highly processed ingredients add little nutritional value. It’s important to remember that clean eating doesn’t mean perfection — it’s about making informed decisions that align with your own health goals and family needs. Reading labels helps me avoid ingredients that our family prefers to limit, especially since some additives can cause sensitivities or allergies. Sharing tips with others has been helpful because everyone’s list of ingredients to avoid can be different based on their priorities and experiences. Some people might focus on avoiding preservatives or bioengineered ingredients, while others may prioritize gluten-free or organic options. Ultimately, being mindful about ingredients empowers us to choose foods that contribute to our well-being while still allowing flexibility and enjoyment. Shopping this way takes a bit more time initially, but it becomes second nature and leads to healthier choices overall.
