Mini Maps for your Models
This was my most viewed video on TikTok so I thought I’d make it my first post here. #ttrpg #dnd #dandd #crafts
Hey everyone! As a Dungeon Master, I used to dread the sheer amount of prep and real-time juggling required during TTRPG sessions. Early on, my 'dashboard' was just a pile of notes and scattered PDFs. But after years of running campaigns, I realized the need for a more robust, 'expert mode' setup. That's when I started diving deep into what makes a truly effective TTRPG campaign dashboard, especially for those complex, long-running sagas. For me, an 'expert' dashboard isn't just about having everything in one place; it's about intelligent integration and features that genuinely streamline gameplay and enhance immersion. One of the absolute best features I discovered is dynamic map integration. Imagine: having all your carefully crafted mini-maps and battle grids readily available, linked directly to your encounters. I've experimented with seamlessly importing my detailed physical models and custom terrain layouts into digital maps, allowing me to quickly switch between overview and tactical views. This isn't just for VTTs; even with a physical table, a digital dashboard can project maps or serve as a quick reference for relative positioning of your actual models. My players absolutely love seeing how their actions on the physical table translate to the digital overview. Beyond maps, advanced NPC and monster management is a non-negotiable expert feature. Forget flipping through monster manuals in real-time. My ideal dashboard allows me to pull up stat blocks instantly, track initiative for dozens of combatants, and apply conditions with a single click. It's about pre-loading encounters and having dynamic health bars and status effects at my fingertips. This lets me focus on role-playing and tactical decisions, not on bookkeeping. Another game-changer is comprehensive player tracking and progression. An expert dashboard should integrate character sheets, track inventory, experience points or milestones, and even manage individual quests and plot hooks. I love being able to quickly pull up a player's character sheet to check a specific spell or skill, or update their inventory after a loot drop. This ensures continuity and helps me tailor future challenges. Then there’s encounter planning and management. This goes beyond just having monsters ready. I look for features that allow me to pre-design entire combat scenarios, including environmental effects, unique actions, and even branching tactical options. Some dashboards even offer random encounter generators tailored to my campaign's region, which is fantastic for those unexpected moments. Finally, robust session prep and lore management are crucial. An expert dashboard acts as a living wiki for my world. I can link NPCs to locations, plot points to specific sessions, and even embed images or sound files. This ensures consistency in my world-building and makes it incredibly easy to refresh my memory before a session, or quickly look up obscure lore details my players might unexpectedly ask about. The ability to customize panels and automate repetitive tasks, like rolling for multiple enemies, truly elevates the experience from good to expert-level efficiency. It's about spending less time managing and more time storytelling.
