It allows you to hit notes that aren't naturally available on the diatonic harmonica, essentially giving you a whole new palette of sounds. My own journey with bending wasn't easy at first. Start with Hole 4 Draw: This is often the easiest to bend slightly. Draw in a clear, steady note. Change Mouth Cavity: While drawing, slowly drop your tongue towards the back of your mouth, as if you're starting to say 'cow' or 'yawn.' Feel your throat open up. You're aiming for a full step bend (down to G from A on a C harmonica) or even a step and a half. Key Elements for Successful Bending: Relaxation: Tension is the enemy of bending. Keep your jaw, lips, and throat relaxed. Tongue Position: This is crucial. Your tongue acts like a valve, directing the airflow. For draw bends, the back of your tongue moves up and back, creating a smaller cavity, while the front of your tongue stays relatively low.
