Cravat
Sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned. More often than not, they’re minor annoyances like this one. A bit of the wing was folded over a line (a cravat). It’s a small one, but it was enough to be annoying and mess up efficient gliding. Usually, the first solution is a quick brake pump. The next is typically a little tug on the stabilo line (outer rear line). If it’s a bad enough cravat, stalling and backflyign the wing helps. But when it’s small, the easiest thing is sometimes to simply fold in the wingtips by pulling down the outer A (front) lines. It worked nicely in this case and I got to enjoy another good flight to a town to the north and back 😊.

A cravat in paragliding occurs when part of the wing fabric gets caught or folded over a suspension line, causing drag and steering problems. This method alters the wing’s shape, allowing wind pressure to release the cravat naturally without risky maneuvers. Understanding cravats and their impact on wing performance is crucial for paragliders. They can cause unexpected steering to one side, requiring corrective lean or control input to maintain balanced flight. Regularly practicing these corrective techniques in safe conditions enhances pilot confidence and safety. Additionally, choosing well-maintained equipment and performing pre-flight inspections reduce the risk of cravats occurring. Familiarize yourself with your wing’s behavior during slow flight and thermal conditions, as turbulence can increase the likelihood of wing fabric folding. By mastering these troubleshooting tips, pilots can minimize disruptions caused by cravats, maintain smooth glides, and enjoy satisfying flights over various terrains. This practical knowledge supports safer, more enjoyable paragliding experiences.
