Line snags & wing curls

It's true, sometimes paragliding throws curveballs, and that recent flight at Lincoln really reminded me how crucial it is to have a few solutions in your back pocket. Beyond just reacting to a line snag or a wing roll, I've learned that a lot of issues can be prevented with some diligent pre-flight checks. Before I even think about launching, I always make it a point to lay out my lines carefully. I used to rush this, but after a few close calls, I now take the time to inspect each line from the harness connection to the risers and then all the way up to the canopy. I’m looking for any twists, knots, or wear and tear. It’s amazing how a tiny twig or a bit of gravel can get tangled in there, just waiting to cause a problem mid-flight. I also pay extra attention to the brakes and steering lines – making sure they run freely and aren't crossed. Another thing that’s made a huge difference for me is understanding the wind conditions before I even step onto the launch site. I watch other pilots, observe the wind sock, and even use a small anemometer to get a feel for both speed and direction. Knowing how the wind behaves helps me anticipate how my wing will react during inflation and launch, reducing the chances of a chaotic start that could lead to snags or collapses. When a snag does happen, like it did for me at Lincoln, the first thing is not to panic. My instructor always hammered that into me. Instead of immediately trying to pull or yank, I first assess the situation. Is it a simple knot? Is it caught on something? Sometimes, a gentle shake of the lines or a slight shift in my body weight can free a minor snag, especially if the wing is still inflated. For those moments when the wind decides to be extra playful and rolls the wing over, that's where practice really comes in. I've spent hours ground handling, just inflating and collapsing the wing, practicing different recovery techniques. What's often overlooked is using the wind itself as an ally. As I mentioned in my flight report, sometimes letting the wind do some of the lifting can help re-inflate a stubborn wing, especially if you're close to the ground or a ridge. It's about finding that delicate balance between letting the wing breathe and controlling its movement. And yes, those gloves! I'm still trying to find that perfect pair – thin enough for dexterity to sort lines, but thick enough for protection. It’s a small detail, but having the right gear really does make a difference in confidence and capability when things get tricky.
