However I found peace doing some really light and easy gardening to keep my mind off everything that was going on. (surrounding my shoulder surgery) Now, I’m 12 wks post op I feel good but I still am under doctors orders not to lift anything heavier then a coffee mug, still not able to return to work, I still have limited range of motion etc. However mentally I feel at peace due to being able to garden.

Limiting heavy lifting is critical to allow proper healing and avoid complications. Engaging in light, low-impact activities such as gardening can offer significant mental health benefits during this recovery period. Gardening, even at a gentle level, involves light stretching, nurturing plants, and being outdoors, all of which contribute to reduced stress and improved mood. For someone restricted from lifting more than a coffee mug, gardening offers an accessible way to stay active without risking injury. This activity can help focus the mind away from pain or frustration caused by limited range of motion and temporary loss of normal routine. Medical experts recommend combining physical therapy with mentally rewarding pursuits to foster holistic recovery. While you follow doctor’s orders regarding movement restrictions, incorporating peaceful hobbies like gardening is an excellent way to maintain a sense of control and positivity. It also encourages gradual increase in mobility and flexibility under supervision. Most importantly, the patient’s experience highlights the connection between physical recovery and mental well-being. Feeling peaceful through gardening can counter feelings of helplessness during enforced rest. For others in similar situations, adopting simple, enjoyable activities within allowable limits can provide vital emotional support throughout the healing journey. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new activity during recovery to ensure it aligns with your specific medical condition and progress. With careful adherence to medical advice combined with nurturing hobbies, post-surgery recovery can become not only about physical healing but also fostering inner peace and resilience.
