Having the creative block? Maybe just take a rest
When creative people “do nothing,” their minds are more than just being blank.
New research in 2024 finds that highly creative individuals feel less bored during idle time, and their thoughts actually move in a more associative, free‑flowing way instead of jumping abruptly from topic to topic.
There were two studies. One included 81 adults who completed creativity measures, then followed by a 10‑minute “think aloud” rest to analyze for how freely and associatively they moved from idea to idea. The other surveyed over 2,600 people during long stretches of unstructured time (like the pandemic lockdown), found that higher creativity is linked to lower boredom in everyday idle moments.
That said, protecting unstructured time may be important for creative minds. It can be a powerful context for ideas, curiosity, creativity, and mental health.
