Nutrient deficiency is linked to mental health

Feeling anxious, depressed, or just off? What you need might be in your plate.

A recent research highlights that nutrient deficiencies can directly influence the mood, contributing to depression and anxiety. Key vitamins and minerals are crucial for neurotransmitter production, brain function, and stress regulation.

For example, deficiencies in vitamin D are linked to low mood and seasonal depression, while B vitamins (B6, B12, folate) are essential for serotonin synthesis. And low omega-3 fatty acids are consistently associated with anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Sample foods include fatty fish (salmon, sardines) for omega-3s, leafy greens and legumes for B vitamins and magnesium, and eggs or fortified dairy for vitamin D. Even small dietary tweaks can support mood, energy, and emotional resilience.
