What is Emotion Contagion?

Have you ever noticed your mood shifting around certain people, even when you feel neutral?

This is called emotional contagion, a term coined by Elaine Hatfield, based on research showing how people automatically mimic the expressions, tone, and posture of others. And then actually start to feel the same emotions.

How it works:

1️⃣Subconscious mimicry of facial expressions, gestures, and vocal tone

2️⃣Mirror neurons in the brain “simulate” others’ feelings

3️⃣Can spread instantly in one-on-one interactions or across groups, online or offline. (yes, you are not imagining it when you’re catching someone else’s mood during a Zoom meeting)

Some practical strategies that may prevent catching negative emotions:

1️⃣Build awareness: notice when your mood is shifting without reason

2️⃣Pause before mirroring someone’s negative energy

3️⃣Regulate your own emotions: breathe, recognize your own emotions, reset posture, adjust tone, etc

4️⃣Limit exposure to persistent negativity, online or offline

Therefore, emotion contagion is normal, fundamental to social bonding, and recognizing it can give you the power to protect your emotional state.
