... Read moreIn today’s culture, the concept of authenticity is complex and often paradoxical. While we seek to connect with our genuine selves, society tends to reward and spotlight authenticity that is packaged and curated for external validation. This transformation creates a situation where authenticity becomes a social performance rather than a true reflection of one’s inner self. From personal experience, I’ve noticed that the pressure to present an "authentic" version of myself on social platforms sometimes feels more like a role to play than a natural state of being. When authenticity becomes tied to metrics such as likes, followers, or branding opportunities, it can lose its depth and meaning. This shift leads to what the article calls “curated branding,” where supposed genuineness is crafted for an audience rather than expressed from within. What’s fascinating is that psychology teaches us that self-validation is a necessary aspect of mental wellbeing—yet, there is a critical difference between internal validation and constantly seeking approval from others. When society increasingly rewards curated authenticity, individuals may feel compelled to perform rather than truly feel authentic. To maintain a true sense of authenticity, I’ve found it helpful to engage in regular self-reflection and mindfulness practices—focusing on what feels genuinely meaningful rather than what might attract attention or approval. It’s a balancing act between honoring our real selves and navigating social expectations. This observation encourages us to rethink how we approach authenticity in a world flooded with social media and branding. Authenticity should remain a personal journey rather than becoming a commodified asset. Embracing our flaws, contradictions, and evolving identities without the pressure to package them for public consumption keeps authenticity meaningful and true to its purpose.
