Be Like Jesus

Throughout the Gospels, we see multiple instances where Jesus intentionally withdrew to rest and pray, such as in Luke 5:16, demonstrating that rest is crucial even for those with demanding missions. Unlike what some might expect, Jesus did not constantly say "yes" to everyone’s requests; He prioritized His calling by saying "no" to misplaced expectations, as seen when He refused to become a political king after feeding the 5,000 (John 6:15). Limiting access to Himself was another key aspect of Jesus’s boundary-setting. While He loved and healed many, Jesus invested most deeply in His disciples, recognizing the limited time He had to prepare them for continuing His mission. This shows the importance of focusing energy where it matters most. Additionally, Jesus did not allow manipulation by others to divert His mission. When confronted by religious leaders’ trick questions, He responded calmly or remained silent, keeping the dialogue aligned with God’s purposes (Matthew 21:23-27). He also modeled walking away from hostility rather than engaging in unproductive or unsafe encounters, such as when He walked through a hostile crowd in Luke 4:28-30. This teaches the value of disengaging from harmful or draining situations proactively. Overall, Jesus demonstrates that boundaries are not barriers to love but rather necessary pathways to sustain loving, faithful living. For individuals today, following Jesus’s example means embracing boundaries as courageous acts that enable one to say "yes" to God’s true calling and "no" to distractions. Healthy boundaries promote sustainable love and effective ministry, helping people avoid burnout. They also create space for self-care, allowing a person to thrive both personally and spiritually. By adopting this biblical perspective, people can better manage their time, relationships, and energy, remaining faithful to their purpose while caring for themselves and others well.
