Building my own safety net

I’m so proud of myself—between my side gigs and the check I got for completing my Science of Reading course, I saved up an entire extra paycheck’s worth of income!

I’m heading out to buy a new stove this weekend, and even though it'll take a chunk of that savings, I feel so at peace. There is no better feeling than being able to handle a big purchase without the "how am I going to pay for this?" panic. Hard work looks good in the kitchen! 🥂 #practicallifeskills #practicalparenting #livelifeonyourterms #liveonyourownterms #livinglifeonmyterms

... Read moreBuilding a financial safety net is a powerful way to gain peace of mind and financial independence, and my journey started with small, consistent efforts like side gigs and leveraging rewards from completing courses, such as the Science of Reading. From personal experience, these side hustles not only boost your income but also create a sense of accomplishment that motivates you to keep growing financially. One key lesson I learned was the importance of setting clear savings goals. By aiming to save an extra paycheck, I created a tangible target that pushed me to manage my finances better and avoid unnecessary expenses. It’s crucial to keep that emergency fund separate, so you don’t dip into it for everyday purchases, but instead reserve it for meaningful investments like a new stove or unexpected bills. Another benefit of financial preparedness is the confidence it brings when making large purchases. Without the usual panic about "how am I going to pay for this?", I was able to enjoy the process and truly appreciate the hard work behind the money I had saved. It transformed buying a stove from a stressful chore into a rewarding milestone. For anyone looking to build their own safety net, consider diversifying your income streams. Besides traditional side gigs, look for opportunities in areas aligned with your skills or interests, like freelance projects, online courses, or tutoring. Completing educational courses can even lead to rewards or certificates that boost your earning potential. Remember, building a safety net is also about mindset. Embrace patience and consistency; even small contributions to your savings add up over time. Engage with communities focused on practical life skills and personal finance to stay motivated and share experiences. Living life on your own terms means taking control of your finances, which in turn empowers your ability to make choices without fear or stress.
