Hey fellow creatives and educators! ✨ Picking up on my last post about those 'art teacher vibes,' I wanted to dive a little deeper into what this incredible journey truly entails. It's more than just teaching kids to draw or paint; it's about fostering imagination, building confidence, and helping them see the world through a different lens. After 13 years in the classroom, I've learned that being an art teacher requires a unique blend of skills. Beyond knowing your mediums—whether it's painting, sculpture, or digital art—you need heaps of patience, adaptability, and a genuine passion for guiding young minds. Every day is different, and you have to be ready to pivot, encourage, and sometimes just listen. Classroom management in an art room can be a fun challenge, too, especially when paint is involved! 😉 One of the biggest questions I often get is how I balance being an artist by night with being an art teacher by day. It’s definitely a juggle, but it’s so crucial for my own creative well-being and for staying inspired to bring fresh ideas to my students. My personal art practice often informs my teaching, and vice-versa. Seeing students embrace new techniques often sparks new ideas for my own work. Speaking of classrooms, my new space with all that natural light has been a dream, but as I mentioned, the echo is real! For any seasoned art teachers out there, what are your best tips for acoustics in a large, open space? Beyond that, setting up an inspiring and functional art educator space is key. Think about clear organization for supplies, designated drying areas, and plenty of display space for student work. It makes such a difference in the flow of class and how students engage. The importance of painting in education (and all visual arts!) cannot be overstated. It’s not just about creating pretty pictures; it develops critical thinking, problem-solving, and fine motor skills. It teaches kids to observe, interpret, and express themselves in non-verbal ways, which is so powerful. My teaching philosophy revolves around empowering students to explore their creativity freely while also building foundational skills. For anyone wondering should I be an art teacher, I'd say if you have a deep love for art, a desire to work with young people, and the resilience to handle the unexpected, it’s an incredibly rewarding career.
