Does this make me a bad parent?

my son really wanted me to ollie over him and I eventually agreed. He loved it! #skateboard

2024/11/15 Edited to

... Read moreThat day, when my son looked at me with that sparkling gaze and begged, 'Dad, can you ollie over me?', my mind raced. On one hand, I saw his pure excitement, the kind of boundless energy only kids possess. It was one of those 'uncontrollable urges' he gets, where he's absolutely fixated on an idea. But immediately, the parental alarm bells started ringing. Was this safe? Was I being irresponsible? The internal debate was intense, and honestly, it felt like my own feelings were getting a workout. I didn't want to disappoint him, but I also didn't want to do something reckless. It's in moments like these that parenting feels like walking a tightrope. Our kids often come up with the most imaginative, sometimes outlandish, requests. How do we distinguish between harmless fun and genuine danger? When children express these strong desires, whether it's for a crazy skateboard trick or something else, it's easy for parents to feel overwhelmed, or even to feel like we're failing if we say no. Sometimes, their reactions to our 'no' can even 'hurt our feelings' – not intentionally, but because we want to see them happy and their disappointment can sting. Or, perhaps, we worry about what other parents might think, leading to self-doubt that feels like our own feelings are being 'hurt' by an invisible jury. I remember thinking, 'Can I ollie over my son safely?' I assessed the situation: his small size, my skateboarding experience, the soft grass we were on. It wasn't a sudden, impulsive leap; there was a moment of careful consideration. This isn't always easy, especially when you're under pressure from an eager child. I've learned that understanding the root of their 'uncontrollable urges' can help—is it for attention? Is it genuine curiosity? Or a need for connection? Sometimes, these urges are just pure, unadulterated childish whims, and part of our job is to guide them without crushing their spirit. It's a delicate balance, and often, our own anxieties or past experiences can make us overly cautious, or, conversely, too permissive. Ultimately, I decided to go for it, taking every precaution. Seeing his face light up, hearing his joyous laughter – it was absolutely worth it. But the lingering question, 'Was this a bad parenting move?' stayed with me. It’s a feeling many parents can relate to, that constant self-assessment and guilt, especially when we bend or break conventional rules for our children’s happiness. It's a reminder that parenting isn't about perfection, but about making the best decisions you can in the moment, learning from them, and most importantly, connecting with your child. We're all just trying our best to navigate these wild, wonderful, and sometimes 'urgent' stages of childhood, and it's okay to question ourselves along the way. Sharing these dilemmas helps us realize we're not alone in feeling our way through it all.
