Having worked as a prosecutor handling child sexual abuse (CSA) cases, I have witnessed firsthand the emotional toll on survivors and the immense challenges in securing justice. Despite the legal system’s promise to protect the vulnerable, many survivors find themselves re-traumatized when their abusers evade sentencing due to systemic flaws. There is often a disconnect between the intent of justice and the realities survivors face in the courtroom. Cases involving powerful defendants—such as affluent perpetrators linked to high-profile scandals—bring additional complexities. The pressure to protect reputations or maintain systemic status quo sometimes leads to cases being dismissed or mishandled, leaving survivors disillusioned and distrustful of the justice system. For example, promises made by prosecutors in public campaigns can create much hope among survivors, but when outcomes fall short, it leads to further pain. Survivors often endure lifelong consequences from abuse, including emotional and psychological scars that only increase when their voices go unheard. It’s essential to acknowledge and uplift the experiences of survivors and understand the importance of compassionate prosecution that prioritizes truth and healing. Moreover, justice is not achieved through punitive measures alone but also through systemic reform—raising standards for how prosecutors engage with survivors, ensuring transparency, and holding the powerful accountable. The courage of survivors to speak out is a catalyst for change, but they need allies within the system who refuse to be outliers and commit to fairness. In my experience, true progress begins when men step forward to empathize and bear witness to survivor stories without deflecting or dismissing the pain. Cultural shifts that acknowledge abuse and encourage accountability among all are vital to breaking cycles of silence. Survivors deserve nothing less than a justice system that respects their humanity and commits to protecting them with integrity.
