have you ever experienced moments when the thought of ‘being cheerful’ felt insincere?
most of us can probably recall ‘putting on a brave face’ in the middle of a personal storm. for many different reasons, we may have chosen to plaster a smile on even though it didn’t feel genuine. for some, it may have been for the people around us more than for ourselves—maybe we wanted them to feel better about the storm we found ourselves in. or perhaps it just helped us avoid discussing things altogether. regardless of the reason why, today the Father wants to assure us that cheerfulness is an authentic reality He wants us to experience in every season of life.
proverbs 17:22 tells us, ‘a cheerful heart brings healing to both body and soul…’ in His goodness, God never prescribes something we don’t have the power to walk in. the prophet nehemiah knew this, so in a season of great despair, he speaks to God’s people saying, ‘do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength’ (nehemiah 8:10). was he suggesting they ‘fake it till they make it?’ no. israel had serious reasons to weep in that season, but nehemiah knew the Lord was offering His people His very own disposition, optimism, and joy — a supernatural reality which is available to each of us today.
so how do we authentically get there? it begins with the revelation that a cheerful heart is developed by renewing our minds to the truth that God is good, and that He finds good in every moment, even the difficult ones. it comes as we learn that the Father is fully confident in His ability to make everything beautiful in its time, and our realization of that is the point we can be cheerful over, even when practical reasons for smiling might seem elusive.
take a minute with Jesus and your journal. bring Him the things in your heart that could benefit from the healing proverbs 17:22 speaks of. address any doubts about His ability to fill you with cheerfulness in the face of pain. then, invite Him to replace doubt with His perspective. listen for His thoughts regarding your pain. write down what you hear and ask for clarity. let Him surprise you with His mastery over trials—He is faithful. finally, choose to allow Holy Spirit to help you adopt His outlook by meditating on these truths until they fully replace your own.
