Still true a year later
Raising a blended and neurodivergent family comes with unique challenges and beautiful rewards. From my personal experience as a stepmom to three children, including neurodivergent kids, I've found that treating all children equally regardless of biology is essential. I don’t use the term "step" to label any child; they are simply siblings to each other, creating a united family. One insightful approach that has held true over time is viewing all behaviors—yelling, hitting, stimming, or crying—as communication. This mindset encourages empathy and helps address the root needs behind these expressions instead of focusing solely on discipline. It’s crucial to interpret these actions as messages that children convey, which leads to stronger connections and better support. Additionally, embracing screen time as a positive regulation tool has been a game-changer. By carefully monitoring educational and speech-enhancing content, screen time becomes a supportive element rather than a restriction. It fosters learning and offers sensory engagement, which is especially valuable for neurodivergent children. Sensory exploration is another cornerstone in our household. Encouraging messy play, such as exploring colors and textures, helps children gain positive sensory input critical for their development and well-being. Allowing physical interaction with their environment supports learning and happiness. Co-parenting with my oldest’s biological mother requires thoughtful coordination and communication. Keeping co-parenting issues separate from our household dynamics has helped maintain harmony and avoid unnecessary complications. I also believe in empowering all children with personal agency, teaching them from an early age that they have control over their bodies and choices. This respect for their autonomy fosters confidence and healthy boundaries across the age range from toddlers to older kids. Honesty about complex topics, communicated in an age-appropriate manner, builds trust. When children ask questions, giving truthful answers strengthens our relationship and supports their understanding of the world. Finally, trusting science is a value we uphold deeply. All our children are fully vaccinated as part of our commitment to health and safety. This foundation has provided peace of mind and reflects the importance of evidence-based decisions in family life. Overall, integrating these principles consistently over the years has reinforced that patience, respect, and open communication form the backbone of a thriving blended neurodivergent family.
