From conversations in my community and my own reflections, respect and protection should come first, above any rigid interpretation. Often, I notice debates around religious beliefs can become a source of division, even leading to actions that may harm innocent kids emotionally or physically. I believe it’s crucial we prioritize the safety and wellbeing of children by questioning and rejecting any excuse rooted in faith that promotes harm. What’s helped me personally is focusing on the core values many religions promote—love, kindness, and care—and reminding myself that these values should never be used as reasons to inflict pain or suffering on others. I have seen that approaching faith with compassion rather than judgment creates a more supportive environment for families and children alike. It’s also empowering to speak up and gently challenge harmful rhetoric that may be cloaked in religious language, especially when it threatens vulnerable members of society like children. By sharing experiences and standing united, parents and community members can foster safer spaces where children are free to grow without fear or harm justified by misinterpreted scripture.
