Many parents find themselves having to leave their jobs or start new careers to accommodate their child's complex needs. This is not a reflection of their professional abilities but rather a necessary adjustment due to limited support systems. In my experience, transitioning career paths after my child’s diagnosis was both difficult and eye-opening. It required balancing medical appointments, therapy sessions, and advocating at school, all while managing household responsibilities. The societal lack of understanding and resources makes these transitions tougher; for example, many workplaces lack flexible policies needed by parents in this situation. Community support networks—including online groups and local advocacy organizations—can be invaluable. They provide emotional support and practical advice on navigating healthcare, education, and employment issues. Greater awareness about the systemic barriers faced by families of disabled children is essential to foster more inclusive policies that help parents maintain their careers without sacrificing caregiving needs. Ultimately, society needs to shift its approach from judgment to support, recognizing that behind every disabled child is a parent striving to do their best amid challenging circumstances. By sharing these experiences, we can promote empathy and advocate for better services that empower families rather than isolate them.
